How to Improve Ad Quality Scores Quickly

If your Google Ads costs keep creeping up while your ads slide down the page, a weak Quality Score is usually part of the story. The good news is that most low scores come from a handful of fixable problems, and some of them can be corrected in an afternoon. After auditing a lot of accounts, the pattern we see over and over is the same: advertisers raise bids when the real issue is relevance. Here's how to improve ad quality scores without waiting months to see results.

What Quality Score Actually Measures

Google Ads Quality Score is a 1-to-10 diagnostic rating assigned at the keyword level, built from three components: expected clickthrough rate, ad relevance, and landing page experience. Each component is graded as above average, average, or below average compared with other advertisers who showed for the same exact searches over roughly the last 90 days. That comparison window is the main reason scores feel slow to move.

One nuance most guides skip is that, according to Google's own Quality Score documentation, the number itself is not an input in the ad auction. What actually feeds the auction and shapes your ad rank is the real-time quality the score is describing. So treat the score like a check engine light rather than the engine. When we review accounts at Wasatch Digital Group, we skip past the headline number and look straight at which of the three components is marked below average, because that tells you exactly where to work.

Where to Find the Fastest Wins

Ad relevance is the component you can usually move fastest, because it's almost entirely in your control and doesn't depend on months of click history. If an ad group is flagged below average for ad relevance, the problem is nearly always structural: too many unrelated keywords sharing one ad.

Tighten Ad Group Themes

Across the accounts we've audited, the most common culprit is a single ad group holding 30 or more keywords that span different intents. One ad can't speak directly to "emergency plumber," "water heater installation," and "plumbing jobs" at the same time. Split those into tightly themed groups of roughly 5 to 15 closely related keywords, each with ads written for that theme. In our experience, this one restructuring step lifts ad relevance from below average to average or better more often than any other single change.

Rewrite Ads Around Search Intent

Once your groups are tight, rewrite your responsive search ads so the headlines mirror the language people actually type. Pull your search terms report, look at the queries driving impressions, and work the dominant phrasing into at least two or three headlines. While you're in there, add irrelevant queries as negative keywords so your ads stop showing for searches they could never win.

Fixing Landing Page Experience

Landing page experience improves when the page a visitor lands on delivers exactly what the ad promised, loads quickly, and works well on a phone. Google evaluates relevance, usefulness, and ease of navigation, and it uses its crawlers to assess the page.

The quickest fix is message match. If your ad promises same-day furnace repair, don't send people to a generic homepage. Send them to a page about furnace repair with a clear next step near the top. Google's guide to using Quality Score to improve performance also points to mobile friendliness and load speed, and those two issues show up constantly in the audits we run. Compress oversized images, cut unnecessary scripts, and test the page on an actual phone before assuming it's fine. This is also where search engine optimization and PPC overlap, since a fast, well-structured page helps both.

Expected Clickthrough Rate Takes Longer

Expected clickthrough rate is the slowest component to improve because it's a prediction built on historical performance, so it needs fresh impressions before it shifts. You can't shortcut it, but you can speed things up by giving searchers a stronger reason to click.

Lead with a specific benefit, a clear offer, or a concrete number instead of vague claims. Use every relevant asset available, including sitelinks, callouts, and structured snippets, since they make the ad larger and more useful. Then let the ad run long enough to collect meaningful data before judging it. Pausing and relaunching ads every few days tends to reset learning and slow your progress.

A Realistic Timeline to Improve Ad Quality Scores

If you want to improve ad quality scores quickly, focus on ad relevance first, landing pages second, and expected clickthrough rate third. Structural ad group changes and rewritten ads often show movement in ad relevance within two to four weeks, depending on traffic volume. Landing page fixes can register once Google recrawls the page, which is frequently faster than people expect.

Expected clickthrough rate usually lags behind both, sometimes by a month or more on lower-volume keywords. Keep in mind that a dash in the Quality Score column simply means there isn't enough exact-match search data yet, not that something is broken. Lower-volume accounts should judge progress by cost per click, impression share, and conversion rate alongside the score itself.

Quality Score and Your Broader Digital Marketing Strategy

Quality Score works best as one signal inside a wider digital marketing plan, not as a goal by itself. The same habits that produce effective Google Ads (clear intent matching, useful pages, and honest messaging) are the habits that drive strong SEO results over time.

That's why we encourage clients to stop treating paid and organic search as separate silos. Keyword data from Google Ads reveals which phrases actually convert, and that insight can shape your content plan. In turn, well-built pages created for organic traffic often make the best landing pages for ads. A good digital marketing consultant should be looking at both channels together, because the overlap is where wasted spend usually hides.
